Summary

The Smart Specialisation Hub helps those working at national and local levels to make investment decisions based on objective, evidence-based tools to help identify comparative advantage. Working in partnership with the National Centre for Universities and Business, KTN leads this independent organisation, collating data sets from across England and developing a framework to make it possible to compare like with like.

Working in partnership with the National Centre for Universities and Business, KTN is leading an independent organisation, the Smart Specialisation Hub, that helps those working at national and local levels to make investment decisions based on objective, evidence-based tools to help identify comparative advantage.

KTN has been busy collating data sets from around the UK and developing a framework to make it possible to compare like with like.

Through the Science and Innovation Audit process, which has encouraged local consortia to develop evidence of their capabilities, and our conversations with national and local actors, we have identified a key gap in the lack of a meaningful and comparable view of capabilities across England’s Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs).

The Hub’s report Mapping England’s Innovation Activity offers a simple, evidenced overview of activity across nineteen sectors for each LEP to address this gap. It uses a combination of academic and research metrics, business metrics and expert opinion to identify where key activity can be found. The publication has been very well received, and we will be building on this work in the next year, adding metrics to build a robust evidence base and improving granularity.
