i3P

Boosting productivity in the infrastructure and construction industries.

Summary

The Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform (i3P) is an innovation community sharing valuable ideas and opportunities to tackle the poor productivity record of the infrastructure and the construction industry. KTN is the Secretariat of the group, which now has 23 members including Crossrail, Tideway, Heathrow, Highways England, The Environment Agency, and Network Rail.

Today, there are over 1,000 members signed up, with nearly 300 innovations shared. The ultimate goal is to establish i3P as the key driver for innovation in the UK infrastructure industry.

Infrastructure, and the construction industry in general, are the least productive industries in the UK. Innovation is seen as a key way to tackle the poor productivity record of the infrastructure industry.

The Infrastructure Industry Innovation Platform (i3P) is an innovation community that shares valuable ideas and opportunities across the infrastructure industry, promoting a culture of collaboration to positively impact both current and future major project and programme delivery. It is a continuation of Crossrail’s Innovate18 programme – with Crossrail and its supply chain sharing over 450 innovations and over £750,000 in investment.

The goal is to establish i3P as the primary driver for innovation in the UK infrastructure industry and to provide a mechanism for directing innovation strategically to address major challenges facing the industry. By establishing a collaborative culture of innovation across both infrastructure clients and their supply chains, i3P will create a ‘safe space’ to identify areas for potential industry improvement, share ideas, and enable members to collaborate in projects that drive value across the infrastructure industry.

The organisation is client-led. KTN serves as Secretariat, and there are 23 members including Crossrail, Tideway, Heathrow, Highways England, The Environment Agency, and Network Rail. Most of their supply chains are also members.

The organisation is run by a Forum that meets quarterly to set the strategic direction of i3P. The Forum is currently chaired by Andy Mitchell, CEO of Tideway and chair of Infrastructure Client Group (ICG). An Innovation Leadership Group is also developing a range of Innovation activities around a set of key strategic themes. The portal is a key tool in driving innovation across the industry. There are now over 1,000 members signed up it, with nearly 300 innovations shared.

Working with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult), i3P has produced a technology road map for the infrastructure industry and is hoping to make a bid into the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
